Features & Performance
Held its own in our short pile and hardwood tests, but was ineffective at long carpet cleanup.
This vacuum wasn’t one of our best-performing machines, but it wasn’t an embarrassment to itself once you factor in its size and weight. Larger vacuums bested it on all our tests, and it always left at least 20 percent of dirt behind regardless of flooring type. At the very least, it did a decent job cleaning up pet hair and debris, making it a good second vacuum for a kitchen or playroom. It’s not whisper-quiet, but the sound isn’t that bothersome, which makes it ideal for the kind of touch-up cleaning that isn’t usually planned in advance.

Conclusion
An acceptable, yet pricey, compact cleaner
With a sleek, elegant design that caters to customers who don’t have much space, the Hoover UH70400 WindTunnel Air will definitely have its fans. However, for those looking at the bottom line and the $180 price tag, it may not be the best option. It struggled on high carpet, and didn’t do well enough on short carpet or hardwood to make up for its high pile troubles. The vacuum was solid in debris pickup, especially on high carpet, but didn’t excel in any one area.
The Hoover UH70400 WindTunnel Air has some appealing features, such as a power brush on/off button, as well as its ability to recline down for easy under-the-couch cleaning. Furthermore, it weighs only 13.36 pounds and has an easy-to-remove extension wand. But is that enough to warrant its price? We think you can do better for the money, especially if you’re judging the vacuum solely on performance or convenience.

Good mid-range vacuum –Â Hoover UH70400
I’ll start this review by saying straight off- I have two Dysons. I also have three birds, three cats, a six-year old child, a husband that telecommutes from home, a big garden, and a father that golfs on dusty courses and brings back a lot of sand and dirt, so our vacuums are put to work on a very regular basis. We vacuum several times a day.
The Hoover was actually a pleasant surprise. While it’s not as powerful as the Dyson, it’s not nearly as expensive.
Pros:
– Suction is excellent. Gets up tons of cat hair, feathers, dirt, dust, litter, seed, etc.
– Works great on rugs and bare floors. It’s also really great at getting stuff up from the grout, which other vacuums can miss.
– Very easy to empty.
– Lightweight but not flimsy.
– Easy to switch between modes.
– Very few attachments to lose and deal with.
– Not too noisy.
– Long cord.
– No bags.
The cons:
– Doesn’t navigate like the Dyson, but that’s actually a pro in some ways. My mom has really bad arthritis in her hands and can’t use the Dyson because of the way it navigates but she CAN use this. So for those with joint issues- this can be a plus.
– The hose assembly is a bit tricky. But that seems to be the case on ALL vacuums- one of our Dysons has a terrible hose assembly that requires way too much work to get the attachments on, so I think this might be another “across the board” issue.
– As others have noted, sometimes pet hair can get wrapped around the cone inside the canister, and when you empty the vacuum you have to reach in and pull it out. Kinda gross.
All in all, it’s a powerful vacuum. Not as powerful as the Dyson, but not as pricey or “fussy”, either. I definitely recommend it for those who don’t want or need a Dyson but want something powerful and easy to use and empty.
