TWO-WHEEL SELF-BALANCING SCOOTERS
WALLYGADGETS’ SMART DRIFTER (WG01)
For cheap and fun transportation, look no further than the Smart Drifting Scooter by Wallygadgets. The WG01 is perfect to use when sight seeing, cruising to a neighbor’s house, or enjoying the weather. And all without gas, noise, or exhaust!
The Drifter runs on a 158Wh lithium battery and boasts a maximum speed of about 10 miles an hour. Available for $$$ on Amazon, the Drifter has a solid build and can be enjoyed rain or shine. The tires are made of solid rubber, so you won’t have to worry about pumping.
- Dimensions: 10 x 10 x 25”
- 25 pounds
- Cool LED lights
- 100-240V charger
- Includes manual
- Made in China
With two pressure-sensitive motors connected by an axle, the Wallygadgets scooter is easy to balance and maneuver. Enjoy 4-5 hours of fun on a fully charged battery (charging takes 60 minutes).
How it works: The Drifter can take you up and down small hills and is best enjoyed with a relaxed stance. Simply lean forwards or backwards at the ankles to speed up/slow down. Pressing your feet against the sides of the “pedals” helps with balance.
There is a tiny pressure sensitive motor beneath each foot that activates when pressed on. The smart motors keep you safe and balanced. When turning, an LED light will flash on that side.
Consumer Opinion: 4.1 out of 5 stars
Fans of the Drifter call it “a Segway without a handle…but is a lot more fun to ride.” Users recommend riding on smooth roads only. You can really feel bumps and cracks.
Larger individuals may have a harder time balancing and will not be able to tilt as much. The learning process is more challenging than expected. Some users spent up to 2 hours learning how to maneuver properly. The biggest complaint was in regards to problems with the charging process.
Available for $$$ on Amazon, Coolreall’s scooter is easy to use, safe, sturdy, and appropriate for children and adults. With anti-slip foot grips, you won’t have to worry about falling off. Plus, the Dreamwalker is super portable with a weight of less than 30 pounds. Dimensions are 10 x 10.7 x 26”.
Available in four colors, the Coolreall has a max speed of about 10 miles per hour and can climb 15-degree hills.
How to use: After turning it on, place one foot onto the device. This will activate the self-balancing system. With the second foot in place, simply lean forwards or backwards at the ankles to accelerate/decelerate. To turn, lean like you would when riding a bike.
The Dreamwalker includes a lifetime warranty and operates on an energy-efficient motor. The Leray Smart Walker system keeps users balanced with 3 gyroscopes and 3 gravity accelerators.
Convenient and good for the environment? No wonder electric scooters are becoming so popular!
- LG lithium 18650 battery
- Charging time: 60 minutes
- Battery life: 5 hours
- Battery capacity: 110Wh
Consumer Opinion: 4.4 out of 5 stars
The scooter takes less than 30 minutes to get used to, even for riders without stellar balance.
“This board is AWESOME!” writes a reviewer who purchased the Dreamwalker in September 2015. He reported that the vehicle was easy to operate even with his weight of 200 pounds.
The Coolreall scooter offers perfect control and stability. Recommended weight limit is 220 pounds. The company advises riders be over the age of 14 and under the age of 45, but this age range can be extended in both directions for fit, responsible individuals. We think it’s a perfect gift for young adults.
The hardest part is getting off and the biggest complaint was in regards to the occasional fake or defective unit.
Comparison: There is surprisingly little difference between the Wallygadgets vehicle and the Dreamwalker. In my opinion, the extra $100 is not worth a small improvement in quality. If you’re worried about longevity, however, the Dreamwalker does come with a lifetime warranty, which may prove to be worth the extra cash.
UNIWHEEL SELF-BALANCING SCOOTERS
If you’ve already mastered the two-wheel self-balancing scooter, why not try the one-wheel version? Besides, it’s much easier to learn than a traditional unicycle.
NINEBOT ONE (E+ MODEL)
Pricier than its two-wheeled competitors, the Ninebot One is available on Amazon for $$$ and looks like something out of a science fiction movie. The Ninebot provides fashionable, intelligent transportation and boasts a maximum speed of about 13 miles per hour. It runs on a 320Wh high-capacity battery.
- 120W charger
- Can climb 20-degree inclines
- Dimensions: 21.2 x 8.6 x 21.5”
- 5 pounds
- Can travel up to 21 miles on a full charge
- Takes 4 hours to charge
Built from a sturdy magnesium alloy, this product comes with a one-year warranty. Ninebot claims you’ll feel like “the master of the world” while riding this sleek unicycle.
The Ninebot was made in China and features “pedals” that fold into the body of the unicycle for easy transportation. Recommended tire pressure is 40-65 psi.
Customer Opinion: 4.7 out of 5 stars
Users love the futuristic, streamlined appearance, the sturdy build, and the attractive lights. The E+ has excellent battery life and is incredibly fun to use.
“Absolutely the best frigging purchase I’ve made. May actually buy a second,” says a reviewer who bought the E+ in January 2015.
The biggest complaint was in regards to the handle breaking. Instead of using the handle to carry it, users recommend lifting the unicycle by its base.
Although harder to learn and less safe than a two-wheel version, this self-balancing unicycle is a blast once you figure it out. “If you’re willing to push through a sometimes frustrating training process, you’ll be so glad to have your own!” writes a reviewer who purchased the Ninebot scooter in May 2015.
AIRWHEEL X3 UPGRADE
Similar to the previous product, but with a much smaller price tag, the Airwheel scooter is available on Amazon for $$$.
At 29.35 pounds, the X3 is 10 pounds lighter than its more expensive competitor. Dimensions are 10.4×18.8×23.4”.
Made in China, the Airwheel features an intelligent system that automatically balances the rider. Inertial monitoring systems and gyroscopes allow the scooter to make minute corrections hundreds of times every second. The X3 is a green product.
- Charger can handle 110V and 220V power
- Includes auxiliary belt, extended nozzle, and training wheels
- Battery lasts about 5 miles
To operate, power on while unicycle is sitting on the ground (vertically). Wait for the vehicle to automatically adjust itself into an upright position before stepping on.
Don’t worry if you see sparks when plugging in. It’s normal. A flashing LED light will warn you when battery life is low. The battery takes only 45 minutes to charge – much more appealing than the 4 hours it takes to charge the Ninebot!
The company recommends using the X3 Upgrade on smooth surfaces during dry weather. Store the Airwheel in a dry environment and make sure to check battery life before each use. Wheels must be inflated using the extension inflation tube.
Customer Opinion: 4.4 out of 5 stars
According to reviews, a 200-pound rider can enjoy the X3 Upgrade for about 80 minutes.
While there are systems in place to prevent injury, this scooter is not easy to learn. Users advise wearing pads and a helmet. In addition, riders recommend staying away from populated roads and sidewalks until you’ve mastered the vehicle.
According to reviews, Airwheel’s manufacturer has great customer service.
Comparison: There is a huge price difference between the two unicycles reviewed above. That extra money pays for the futuristic experience and the lights. If your main goal is to get noticed – and perhaps feel like you’re in a Star Wars movie – spend the extra money and go for the E+. If you just want to enjoy the thrill of a self-balancing unicycle, go for the simpler (but still high-quality) X3 Upgrade.
